The
History of Axline Pharmacy
|
Axline
Pharmacy was founded in 1927 by Mr. William Axline,
Sr. A 1921 graduate of Monmouth College, he first
taught and coached at Princeville. Seeking a
career change, Mr. Axline enrolled in Philadelphia College
of Pharmacy, graduating the same year he began Axline
Pharmacy.
He began his business in Roseville,
Illinois, in partnership with Mr. Henry Bradshaw, a Monmouth
businessman whose establishment at 55 Public Square (Spriggs
& Bradshaw), featured paints and photography
supplies.
Mr. William Axline Sr. owned and operated the drug
store in Roseville until his retirement in 1970.

In 1960 Mr. Axline formed a partnership with his son,
Mr.
William Axline, Jr. and Mr. Robert Crawford. They operated
the business at 55 Public Square until 1967, when the new
pharmacy was built at 220 North Main Street in Monmouth.
It operated as Axline Crawford Pharmacy until 1977 when
Mr. Crawford left the business. Mr. William Axline, Sr. and
Mr.
William Axline, Jr. operated the business together until the death of
Mr. Axline Sr. in 1986.
From that time to 2007, Axline Pharmacy was owned and
operated by Mr. William Axline, Jr. |

Son of the founder of Axline's Pharmacy, and Mrs. Jessie
Spicer Axline, Mr.
William Axline, Jr. was born in Monmouth and raised
and educated in Roseville, IL public schools, Monmouth
College and the University of Iowa College of
Pharmacy.
He graduated from Iowa in 1958 and practiced
pharmacy in Macomb and the United States Air Force
before returning to Roseville and Monmouth.
Mr.
Axline's wife, Sandy, retired from teaching
and assisted in the pharmacy as a licensed
Pharmacy Technician until 2007 when her husband sold the
pharmacy.

William Axline, Jr.

|
In
2002, the pharmacy installed their 4th computer
processing system, a satellite data transmission of
insurance billings and automated tablet counters along
with optical scanners to optimize accuracy and
efficiency. The prescription area was doubled in size
due to the increase of prescriptions being filled.
Then, in 2004, Mr. William Axline, Jr.
merged with Mr. Jim
Vugteveen, owner and operator of Zimmer's Apothecary. |

Mr.
Jim
Vugteveen was
born in Northeastern Iowa in 1938, to parents of Dutch
and Belgian descent.
Received K through 12 education in the Rock Valley
Iowa schools and graduated from the Pharmacy
school at the University of Iowa in 1960.
Licensed in Iowa, Florida and Illinois, Mr.
Vugteveen
worked in Macomb and Astoria Illinois from 1960 to
1968. He
married to wife Betty 1966.
He
moved to Monmouth
and shared half interest in Zimmers Drug
with Mr. Ed Kelly for 10 years, becoming
sole owner in 1977, renaming it Zimmers
Apothecary. He merged with Mr.
Bill Axline in 2004.

Mr.
Jim
Vugteveen |
|
|
The
pharmacy employs 28 people, 12 of whom have been
employed by Mr. Axline for over 12 years, and is
open 64 hours per week. In addition to Mrs. Sandy Axline
helping her husband three of the employees have served
Axline customers for more than 20 years.... Linda
Taylor, Judy Slater and Roger Cummings. Two others,
including Mark Shallenberger and Shirley Caldwell, have
been employed by the pharmacy for more than 10 years.
